Orientalist Genealogies of Comparative Literature

10-12 June 2026, Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca

This workshop examines orientalist genealogies of comparative literature through inter-imperial, semi-peripheral, and transnational frameworks. The program brings together invited lectures by Shu-mei Shih and Sujata Patel with panels featuring members of the GLORC research team. Topics range from settler-of-color critique, peripheral social theory, and East European world-literary formations to Romanian orientalisms, minority belonging, gendered and racialized representation, extraction fiction, narodism, imperial media, and the early institutional history of comparative literature in Romania.
